# Barrel tube for API 11AX rod pumps.

Ameritube supplies seamless tube for sucker rod pump barrels to pump shops and artificial lift manufacturers, in the metallurgies wells actually need: admiralty brass for corrosive fluids, carbon steel for plating, stainless and Monel for the worst holes. Held to the straightness and wall tolerance that honing and plating require.

## Barrel materials

| Material | Where it is used |
| --- | --- |
| C44300 admiralty brass | Corrosive produced water, H2S and CO2 at moderate levels, wells where steel barrels pit. Naturally corrosion resistant without plating. Drawn and tested in our Hillsboro mill. |
| Carbon and alloy steel | The standard barrel, chrome plated or nitrided by the pump shop. Supplied honed-ready. |
| TP304, TP316 stainless | Higher chloride and CO2 wells. |
| Monel 400 | Severe H2S, high-chloride, and high-temperature wells. |

All barrel tube is supplied seamless, with wall concentricity and straightness suited to honing to API 11AX bore tolerances.

## The four API pump types

API Specification 11AX standardizes two main pump types, rod pumps and tubing pumps, in four configurations determined by the barrel (stationary or traveling) and where the pump seats (top or bottom). The letter designations in 11AX cover heavy-wall, thin-wall, and X-type barrels with metal or soft-packed plungers.

## Reading an API pump designation

The full designation strings together the tubing size, bore, pump type, barrel type, seating location and type, and the lengths. In order:

1. **Nominal tubing size**, 1.9" to 4.5" OD, two digits (20 = 2-3/8", 25 = 2-7/8", 30 = 3-1/2").
2. **Basic bore diameter**, 1.0625" to 3.75", three digits (125 = 1-1/4", 150 = 1-1/2", 175 = 1-3/4", 200 = 2").
3. **Pump type**: R for rod, T for tubing.
4. **Barrel type**: H heavy wall, W thin wall, X for X-type (heavy wall with thin-wall threads), P heavy wall with soft-packed plunger, S thin wall with soft-packed plunger.
5. **Seating location**: A top, B bottom, T bottom with traveling barrel.
6. **Seating assembly**: C cup type, M mechanical.
7. **Barrel length** in feet.
8. **Nominal plunger length** in feet.
9. **Upper extension length** in feet, if used.
10. **Lower extension length** in feet, if used.

## Worked example

**20-125-RHBC-10-4-2-2**

A rod pump (R) with a 1-1/4" bore (125), heavy-wall barrel (H), bottom seating (B), cup-type seating assembly (C), 10-foot barrel, 4-foot plunger, 2-foot upper extension, 2-foot lower extension, for 2-3/8" tubing (20).

## What to send with a barrel tube RFQ

The API designation tells us the bore and length. To quote the tube we also need:

- **Material**: admiralty brass, carbon steel grade, stainless grade, or Monel.
- **Finished bore and barrel OD**, or the honing allowance you want us to leave.
- **Tube length**, allowing for extensions and thread-cutting stock.
- **Quantity**, and whether this is a one-time order or a blanket with releases.
- **Plunger clearance class** if it affects your bore tolerance.
- **Valve and fitting materials** if you want us to quote bar stock for the cages and seats as well.
